Born in Girona in 1994 and now based in Barcelona, Vernau Mier is an accomplished saxophonist and composer deeply rooted in jazz. His musical journey began with classical guitar and violin, transitioning to saxophone at age 11. At 14, he met Dani Alonso and co-founded the JBBG (Youth Big Band of Girona), a pivotal force in Girona's jazz scene.
At 18, Vernau moved to Barcelona to study jazz performance at ESMUC, forming the Vernau Mier Quintet. With this group, he recorded his debut album, Nebuloses d'Azimut, live at the Sunset Jazz Club. The album, featuring original compositions, premiered at the Barcelona International Jazz Festival. In 2016, Vernau earned a scholarship to pursue a Master’s degree at the Hochschule für Musik Basel (Switzerland). There, he studied with world-class musicians such as Mark Turner, Larry Grenadier, Jeff Ballard, and Miguel Zenón. During this time, he recorded Frisson Sextet, released in 2018 by Fresh Sound New Talent. Vernau has collaborated with renowned artists like Jesse Davis, Alex Sipiagin, Jorge Rossy, and Joan Monné, earning recognition in competitions such as Dbut! Jazz 2013 and JM Spain 2018. Beyond his solo projects, Vernau is a key member of the jazz quartet Fiasco and has contributed to genre-blending projects, including Miss C-Line & The Rabidz. |
